PARTIAL
MOVE BACK TO VALLEY VIEW: The Bambinos through to the U10
portion of our house games will resume play at Valley View
Fields #1 & 2 this coming Saturday, Oct 24th. The
older age groups, Selects and Adults will continue to play on
the fields where they've been playing so far this Fall. Thanks
to Pat McMahon, Brian T., Phil Statham, Sabine Schill and Mike
Oldale for moving the goals on Saturday afternoon. VP of
House, Brian Tomashewski has issued the new Valley View 1
& 2 field configurations. Coaches, please check with your
div managers and then please inform your team on which Valley
View field your games will take
place. HEALTH ADVISORY - H1N1 VIRUS AND
GENERAL HYGENE AS FLU SEASON APPROCHES
With considerable speculation as to the impact
which the H1N virus could have on Canadians this fall and
winter, the following specific recommendations and general
hygiene tips (click
here) are being issued to BC Soccer member Clubs,
Districts and Leagues to help everyone take steps in
preventing the spread of this virus and all other influenza
viruses in the coming
months.
VOLUNTEERING The next event
for which we'll be in need of volunteer help, is our house
"WIND UP" on Nov 21st. At that time, we will require
assistance for Spring Registration, concessions and equipment
return. For anyone who would like to pitch in a few hours,
please contact Pat at mcfos@uniserve.com

GAMES

http://www.2009worldmasters.com/ PRACTICE FIELDS
AND GYMNASIUMS USAGE Recent field closures and
limited gymnasium space has made it more difficult for all
teams to find a time and place to run a practice. An excellent
way to address this problem is to have the younger teams
practice on the smaller elementary fields and gyms and for the
older age groups to use the larger fields and gyms. But
how do we know which field and gym is suitable for which age
group? For now, please call Cheri, our administrator for help
on this. For the future, we're working on generating a
list of division-appropriate practice facilities, which we
hope will help with this issue for the Spring
season. ATHLETE OF THE WEEK FEATURE in the
Echo Read the Echo on Oct 27 to find out who from
the CVUSC will be the "AOTW"! The Comox Valley
Echo and Thrifty Foods have a weekly feature called "Athlete
of the Week" which promotes kids' participation in local
sports clubs. If your child likes soccer and would like
to be featured in the paper, send us an e-mail to
mjblecha@gmail.com. E-mails should include a digital photo
(headshot) of your child (any age), their full name, their
age, their school, how many years they've played soccer with
our club, their favourite soccer player, and their favourite
hobby.

"COACHES OF THE MONTH" FOR OCTOBER
Congratulations to Ken Heinrich and Ken
Erickson for being coaches
of the month for October 09. Ken Heinrich coaches U7/8G team
England and the U9/10G Cosmos. Ken Erikson coaches the U7/8G
team Canada and the U9/10G Rowdies. Both have been coaching
for several years and both are passionate and enthusiastic
about the game. Their enthusiasm is infectious with their
players! Way to go, coaches!
FAIR PLAY CODE
FOR COACHES 1. I will be reasonable when
scheduling games and practices remembering that young athletes
have other interests and obligations. 2. I will
teach my athletes to play fairly and to respect the rules,
officials and opponents. 3. I will ensure that
all athletes get equal support, instruction and playing
time. 4. I will not ridicule or yell at my
athletes for making mistakes or for performing poorly. I will
remember that children play to have fun and must be encouraged
to have confidence in themselves. 5. I will make
sure that equipment and facilities are safe and match the
athlete's ages and abilities. 6. I will remember
that children need a coach they can respect. I will be
generous with praise and set a good example. 7. I
will obtain proper training and continue to upgrade my
coaching skills. Source: Canada Soccer

Development ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Grassroots
Development Clinic BCSoccer Grasroots Development
Manager Dante Zanatta put on a fantastic training session for
U11 boys and girls followed by a Grassroots Presentation and
Coaches Training session this past 5 Oct 09. Approximately
15-20 CVUSC coaches showed for the sessions and the feedback I
have received has been extremely positive. It was impressive
for several reasons: The
passing session itself was excellent for its simplicity and
fluid structure from Warm-up through and Balance Agility and
Coordination drills to functional and game situation drills
always focussed on the "passing"
theme The subtle but highly
effective adaptations and progressions which he individualized
for each player and coach really defined what true coaching is
all about; and The continual
focus on the key factors of the passing theme ensured all
players knew the focus of the session.
I wish all
coaches of all age groups had attended. Although the title was
"Grassroots Development" it was really a session on how to be
a better coach no matter what level you coach. It was about
reading your players and adapting the group session for each
individual at a level which recognizes the level of
development based on age and ability. I plan to have at least
one Grassroots session in the Fall and Spring. If you want to
be a better coach I highly encourage you to come to the next
one regardless of the age level you
coach. Coaching Pointer: Where to
stand to coach? I'm noticing some fantastic preparation and
organization of training sessions by CVUSC House and Select
coaches in addition to many new excellent small sided games
that I haven't seen before. But where we are positioned when
we coach is also very key to coaching well. I often see
coaches standing in the middle of the session or game in
amongst the players which can be distracting for the players
and reduces the impact you have when you want to make a
coaching point. So take the time to remove yourself from the
middle of the session and take up a position outside the
session where you can see the complete movement of players, ie
in a small sided game its on the side lines. Then when you see
a coaching point, stop the session, have the players stand
still, come into the playing area and tell them succinctly how
to correct it, demo the correct skill/tactic, have the players
demo it to confirm understanding and gain confidence, then
move off the pitch and go live. I think you will have greater
results adopting this tried and tested coaching technique.
Cheers Ash Mohtadi THE
11+ - A COMPLETE WARM UP TO PREVENT
INJURIES Warming up prior to playing and training
is a matter of routine for any serious player. A smart warm-up
not only improves your performance, but also helps you to
prevent injuries. "The 11+", the new injury prevention
programme from FIFA's Medical Assessment and Research Centre
(F-MARC), provides a complete, football-specific warm-up and
can easily be integrated into a daily training routine.
"The 11+" is divided into three parts: it starts
off with running exercises (part I), moves on to six exercises
with three levels of increasing difficulty to improve
strength, balance, muscle control and core stability (part
II), and concludes with further running exercises (part III).
The different levels of difficulty increase the programme's
effectiveness and allow coaches and players to individually
adapt the programme. "The 11+" takes approx. 20 minutes to
complete and replaces the usual warm-up before training. Prior
to playing a match, only the running exercises are performed,
for about ten minutes. "The 11+" has proven to
cut injuries by up to half - if performed correctly and
regularly. When it is adopted together with the values of fair
play, it enables you, as a player or coach, to protect
yourself, your team and your opponents and thus increase
everyone's enjoyment of the game.
