WIND-UP THIS SATURDAY Nov 21st: (not the 28th as on some schedules)

Team-mates get to play together for the last time this season, coaches get thank-yous from players and parents alike, players get to redeem their tickets at the concession stand, and Timmies hand out their goodies to teams up to U8. It is also a time for coaches to turn in their sack of balls and cones to our equipment lads and for coaches for U9 and up to return their teams' clean jerseys. Perhaps most importantly though, it's the first opportunity for parents to register their kids for the Spring season. It's a big day, which leads to the next paragraph....

USED EQUIPMENT

shoesIf in case you feel that your child is beginning to out-grow their cleats and/or shin pads and you don't have anyone to pass them along to, you can leave them with our equipment managers after the windup and they will go to a very good cause. (Please see the article at the end of the newsletter for as example of a good cause).
Selects

selects The first half of the select season draws to an end on November 29th. Outdoor play will resume at the end of January and will progress into Cup play-downs thru the month of February. During December and January our select teams will have the opportunity to compete in various futsol events throughout the upper island.

While the Upper Island league has endured a series of challenges this season the hard work of the UISA executive appears to be making headway as we strive to move forward on both short and long term goals. Discussions are underway that may see additional teams join the younger age groups within the UISA in the New Year. Moving forward, discussions will continue with the Lower Island Soccer Association, as we work toward one of our long-term goals of having interlocking play in our older age groups.

As a final note, a huge pat on the back for Wayne Kuhnert and the rest of his U-12 girls coaching staff. Wayne's girls (the U-12 Fury) entered the select season in an age group with no other teams. The Fury (two teams of 12 players) have been able to find games throughout the island and have managed to be on the field every weekend. Their highlights include a 1-2 finish at the Lakehill tournament in Victoria last month. Great job, Wayne!!

Used Equipment goes to good use in Guatemala.

(the following is a letter submitted to the club by Greg Vivian)

My name is Greg Vivian. I coached within your club for 5 years while my children participated in the league. I went on to take my class 3 referee certification. I also served the club as referee scheduler and was the ref association president for 3 years.

My wife and I have been going to the Santiago Atitlan area in Guatemala for 10 to 12 weeks each year for the last 4 years. We have started a few projects that assist the indigenous Mayans in a number of ways, from supplying student scholarships, building efficient wood burning kitchen stoves and initiated a reforestation/income generation project by providing macadamia seedlings to families. We raise the money for these projects by purchasing their hand made textiles at a fair trade price and selling them through our non-profit society, Comercio Justo Imports Association. Our last local sale this year will be at the 'Fiesta Fair Trade Fair' in the Florence Filberg centre on Sat, Nov. 21st.

These people are passionate about soccer but most do not have the resources to buy uniforms, cleats or soccer balls. They will however spend their lunch hours or any other available moment to scrimmage on some dirt area with any ratty ball they possess. Three years ago I approached the CVUSC to see if they would pass on some used soccer balls so that I could take them to Guatemala and distribute them to people that earn less than $5.00 a day.

For the first 2 years your club donated 20 new and used balls and last year you also passed on a number of used jersey sets. I want to thank the CVUSC for allowing me to pass on this equipment and to witness their appreciation of your generosity.
