Andrew Sherret Limited Kindly donated the materials needed for the construction of two Futsol Goals that were recently used at the "Snowball" Futsol tournament this last weekend. This is the same company that also donated the piping used to fabricate 80 corner-flags that were first used at last year's Mini World Cup and that we continue to use today. Our club wishes to extend a warm thanks to Mr. George Hill at Andrew Sherret for the materials. They are located at 780-30th St. in Courtenay. This December 12th and 13th weekend saw various teams from the CVUSC and Campbell River compete at the "Snowball" Futsol Tournament held at the Cumberland Recreation Centre. Early reports state that parents very much enjoyed the tournament and would like to see more of them. Big thanks go to Darrin McLeod for playing such a major part in organizing the event.  The next futsol tournament is the 2nd Annual UISA "Fireball Futsal Festival" on Sunday Jan 10th in Nanaimo VIU (Vancouver Island University, formerly Malaspina). For U12 to U16 Boys and Girls, 3-40 minute games per team

CONGRATULATIONS TO SARAH STEWART-GRANTHAM FOR BEING SELECTED PLAYER OF THE MONTH FOR DECEMBER.

Number 18, Sarah is a striker for the CVUSC U14 Crimson Crush. She has a very strong work ethic and a real desire to be the best player she can be. She comes to games and practices focused and ready to work. She's very respectful to her team-mates and her coaches making her very popular within the team She's very skilled, especially on offence.  She even has her signature move, drop by and watch her play and you'll see her opponent get beat by it! Sarah's love, passion and understanding for the game are clearly noted in the attached article she wrote recently. It is a pleasure to coach you Sarah, keep at it! The Coaching Staff, CVUSC Crimson Crush.

The following is the first paragraph excerpt.

"Soccer; to some it's the greatest sport on the planet. To others, it's just a fun game played to pass the time. To me, soccer is more than just a way to keep in shape or have fun with a ball. Soccer is art. Not art as in painting or playing music, but a different kind of art. Not many people realize that sports are much more than a way to keep fit or make you feel good about yourself. Maybe it's just me, but I think sports have more meaning."

WIND-UP EXPERIENCE

timmiesOn November 21st (wind-up), the rain and wind held out until the afternoon. A few afternoon matches were called short and the micros matches were cancelled but most divisions got their games in.  The volunteer engine was running on all cylinders with folks helping with concessions, with registration and with Mike and Matt's equipment return. A warm thank-you goes out to all of those who helped wrap up the house soccer season. The kind folks at Tim Hortons did not disappoint again this wind-up. Thanks to John & Linda Brocklehurst, their children and grandchildren who endured the conditions and made sure every kiddie received a medal, a water bottle and a bag of timbits. Thank you to everyone for contributing to a great wind-up.

The Spring House Season kicks off again on Saturday April 10th and goes through to Saturday June 19th.  The coaches meetings are slated for Monday and Tuesday March 29th and 30.  The Mini World Cup will take place in Port Alberni in 2010 but no dates have officially been set as of yet. Stay tuned for news on that great event.

VP DEVELOPMENT COACHES' CORNER

Another exciting fall has come and gone for the House League and continues for the Select teams. May I offer my assessment of the development of coaches and players below.

Player Development- I've been highly impressed by the development of all CVUSC House and Select players this past fall. Its a simple metric and perhaps it demonstrates only my own faults, but when I see House Players beautifully passing the ball up the field using both feet equally well, this tells me that they are learning the game, becoming comfortable and confident with the ball, and successfully developing strong individual skills which will put them in good stead for years to come. Other great examples I've seen are: Select players who are gaining the confidence and ability to "turn" a defender and finish a ball on goal, or to see a House player who, previous to this September having never played organized soccer before, enthusiastically directed her team mates to get "goal-side" on the final game day! All these are signs of well-developing or highly developed players who will enjoy the game even more as they get better. Keep up the great work!

Coaching Development- All of the above could not happen if it wasn't for enthusiasm, desire and dedication of the many House and Select volunteer coaches who I've also been equally impressed with this past fall. From what I've observed, CVUSC coaches are well organized, are using the tried and true method of individual skills development as the focus of their sessions, ensuring all players have a ball at their feet during the sessions, and end each session with a small sided game. The dedication to each team and the building of team cohesion and spirit by coaches, managers (T.M. especially!), and parents has also been extraordinary and I've been taking my own notes in this respect. From Sam White at the U5 Bambino level (who apparently has taken Bambinos far beyond the ability of the last guy to coach Bambinos) to Chris Koppa at the U18 level, you can be deeply proud of your efforts! I hope for some of you I have been able to help where I've had the opportunity to coach your teams. I'm in the process of finalizing the dates of 2010 CVUSC sponsored Community Grassroots, Child and Senior Coaching clinics and will publish these on the CVUSC Website as soon as I receive confirmation from BC Soccer. I can't say enough about taking these clinics, I'm 100% sure you will come away from them a better coach- and your players will notice and appreciate this.

Individual Congratulatory Remarks

Congratulations to the following CVUSC Players, past and present, who were chosen by BCSoccer to attend an invitation to the Provincial Team Program try-outs in Vancouver this December: Cole Freeman, Maddie Savoie, Bryce Marinus, Malia Irvine, Delaney Carr, Erika Massicotte, and Nolan Wirth.

I remember with fond (fading?) memories many, many years ago trying out and playing for the Alberta Provincial Boys team and winning the U16 and U17 National Championships and I wish you all the best in trying to gain a spot on the BC Roster.  I'm convinced you all have the physical, mental, and technical skills to make these teams- so go for it! From the CVUSC Executive great work and good luck with the selection process!

Cheers

Stephen Hart named Canada's new national men's head coach

HartThe Canadian Soccer Association announced today that Stephen Hart has been appointed head coach of Canada's national team. Hart will be in charge of Canada's qualification efforts as Canada works toward the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™.

'Stephen Hart is the man in charge with the task to lead Canada to the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil,' said Canadian Soccer Association president Dr. Dominic Maestracci. 'He delivers an exciting brand of football that has proven to be successful against our CONCACAF opponents. He will have full support of our country as he builds a winning team that will qualify us for Brazil in four years time.'

"I am honoured to be chosen for this prestigious and very important position," said national head coach Stephen Hart. "I am fully aware of the expectation and look forward to the challenge of building a team for the 2014 FIFA World Cup™ Qualifiers and beyond."

Hart most recently served as Canada's interim head coach for the 2009 season. He helped Canada compile a record of four wins, one draw and three losses, including a quarter-final finish at the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup. In the group stage of the CONCACAF Gold Cup, Hart led Canada to a first-place finish in its group. In the quarter-final stage, Canada lost 0:1 to Honduras who scored on a penalty kick.

Job descriptions - Defenders  (From "Footy4Kids")

1) Your main job is to stop attackers shooting - you don't have to win the ball.

2) If you're not the closest defender to the ball, make sure you back up the defender who is closest.

3) Stay alert, try to guess what is going to happen next.

4) Direct attackers towards places where they can't shoot - the sideline is your friend.

5) When you are closing down an attacker, keep your eyes on the ball. Wait for him or her to lose control before you tackle.

6) Be brave! If you have to put your body in the way of a shot, do it.

7) When you have the ball get your head up and look for a quick pass to a midfield player or forward.

8) Stay on your feet - sliding tackles are a last resort.

9) Don't hoof the ball up-field all the time hoping that one of your players will get on the end of it. That's another last resort!

10) When passing back to your goalkeeper, pass the ball to his stronger foot and to the side of the goal (see 'technique', below)
