New this season: 1) Coning the fields Those
divisions that start the day, will cone the fields and those
cones will not be picked up in between matches. Rather, the
unplaced cones from the second wave of games will simply be
handed over to the parting division and so on until the last
division will pick up their cones. This eliminates the tedious
duty of picking up cones after every game only to have the
next coach lay them down again. Please consult with your div
mgrs on implementation. Two things could happen: either chaos
will ensue or it will work. I'm betting on the
latter! 2) Unlocking and locking up the
goals. Please let's everyone (including parents
not just coaches) chip in to move the goals into place at the
start and move them back to be locked up at the end of the
day. Ideally, each coach can find two parents per team can
take on this duty to help the coach in this regard. When this
is neglected as sometimes occurs, locks & keys and chains
go missing and goals get left on the field only to get
damaged. Everyone's assistance on this is greatly appreciated.
If you are assigned a key, please ensure that your keys are
returned to our Equipment managers at the end of the
season. Our club would greatly benefit from a volunteer who
would take on the duty of generating a key sign out list and
distributing the keys at the start and collecting them at the
end of the season. If such a wonderful volunteer exists,
kindly e-mail Mike at mcoldale@shaw.ca or Matt at
mkqts@telus.net The "Coach of the
Month" feature will resume when the house soccer season starts
again in April. |

Major League Soccer is coming to
Vancouver
 Premier Gordon
Campbell, Mayor Gregor Robertson, Attorney-General Wally Oppal
and Sport Minister Mary Polak were all on hand to hear MLS
commissioner Don Garber announce Vancouver as the second city
in Canada and the 17th in North America to join the league.
The team will begin play in 2011. MLS has been around for 13
years and had built a solid fan base when it suddenly became
glamorous, in 2007, with the addition of David Beckham to the
Los Angeles Galaxy. Toronto FC joined the league that year,
too, and caught a wave of excitement that now has Canada's
first MLS club wondering how - with season ticket-holders
capped at 16,000 and 14,000 on a waiting list - it can expand
to fit more fans into 20,000-seat BMO Field. The
Vancouver Whitecaps will open their first season of play in
2011, in what will then be a newly refurbished BC Place
stadium, with a retractable roof. "What a great day for
Vancouver ... this truly is an historic moment," Mr. Garber
said as he made official the long-rumoured addition of the
Whitecaps to the league. "We're absolutely convinced that this
will be a terrific Major League Soccer city," Mr. Garber said,
after watching a promotional video that recalled the
excitement of the 1970s and 1980s, when Vancouver had a team
in the now-defunct North American Soccer League. In 1979,
Vancouver won the North American championships, in an away
game, and came home to find tens of thousands of people
celebrating in the streets. Bob Lenarduzzi, who was then a
star player with the club and is now Whitecaps president,
thought he'd never see that kind of soccer excitement here
again. The Whitecaps folded in 1984 after
the NASL foundered. And although the club was reborn as the
86ers in 1986, becoming the Whitecaps again in 2000, it played
in lesser leagues and never again had the heady times of the
past. "Wow ... unbelievable," Mr. Lenarduzzi said of seeing
the Whitecaps climb into the ranks of Major League Soccer. "I
thought I had seen the best of soccer [in Vancouver] ... but
the best is yet to come." Mr. Lenarduzzi said he felt the
announcement was the most exciting sports news since Vancouver
was awarded the 2010 Olympic Games. And he predicted B.C.
soccer fans will flock to see the team. In 2007, the Whitecaps
drew 48,000 fans to an exhibition game against the L.A.
Galaxy. "You are not going to find a place where
fans are more committed to soccer," said Mr. Campbell, who was
so excited he went to the podium to speak despite a sore
throat. He remembered watching the Whitecaps play in the NASL,
when BC Place stadium was "full to the rafters with fans," and
said it would be that way again. "That's where we're headed,"
agreed Mr. Robertson, who recalled watching Pelé, the
Brazilian star who won his first World cup at age 17, play in
Vancouver in the 1970s, when the city buzzed with excitement.
"We are a soccer city," Mr. Robertson said. Jeff Mallett -
part of the Whitecaps ownership group along with Greg Kerfoot,
Steve Luczo and Steve Nash - said the move to MLS is a good
business decision for the club, but it's also exciting because
of what it means to the city. Mr. Mallett, a
former CEO of Yahoo! and part owner of the San Francisco
Giants baseball team, was born in North Vancouver and grew up
in Victoria, where Mr. Nash went to school before going on to
star in the National Basketball Association. "Steve was
texting me like a little kid last night, [asking] 'Are we
there yet? Is it done?'" Mr. Mallett
said.
Costa Rica beats USA 3-0 to claim first CONCACAF
U-20 Championship title since 1988
 3/15/2009 - MACOYA,
Trinidad - Josue Martinez scored a pair of second-half goals
to lead Costa Rica to its second CONCACAF Under-20
Championship, pacing a 3-0 victory over the United States on
Sunday. Costa Rica qualifies for the Fifa U20 World Cup held
from Sept 24 to Oct 16 in Egypt. 3/11/2009 -
MACOYA, Trinidad - Marcos Urena scored in the 72nd minute and
gave Costa Rica a 2-1 victory over Canada on Wednesday,
sending the Ticos to the semi- finals of the CONCACAF Under-20
Championship and a second straight trip to the U-20 World Cup.
The loss eliminated Canada and prevented it from reaching the
U-20 World Cup for a fifth straight time. The result also
assured Trinidad & Tobago of a semi-final berth and its
first trip to the U-20 World Cup since 1990.
Santos rallies over Montreal to cap Champions
League quarterfinals with drama
3/6/2009 Santos rallied with three goals in the final 16
minutes, including two in injury time by Carlos Quintero, to
cap a dramatic rally Thursday, just getting past the Montreal
Impact 5-2 to prevail 5-4 on aggregate.
3/12/2009The inaugural CONCACAF Champions League
has gone according to plan, at least for the most part. The
region's top domestic league, the Mexican Primera Division,
has three teams - Cruz Azul, Atlante and Club Santos Laguna -
in the semifinals. Rounding out the final four is the Puerto
Rico Islanders. That's the Puerto Rico Islanders of the United
Soccer Leagues' First Division, which has gone further in the
competition than any of the four Major League Soccer squads
that entered. FIFA looks forward to Egypt
and Nigeria 2009
Under the chairmanship of
FIFA Vice-President Jack A. Warner, the Organising Committees
for the FIFA U-17 and U-20 World Cups met in Zurich today
(Tuesday, 11 March) to review the preparations for the U-17
and U-20 events due to take place in Nigeria and Egypt,
respectively, in 2009. "These competitions are two of the
highlights of the international calendar for 2009," said FIFA
President Joseph S. Blatter, who opened the two meetings and
also gave the members of the committees an update on the
decisions taken on goal-line technology during the IFAB
meeting in Scotland on Saturday, 8 March.
Finally, an announcement was made regarding the
member associations which have expressed an official interest
in hosting the two competitions in 2011. For the FIFA U-20
World Cup, the bidders are the Czech Republic, Colombia,
Mozambique, Portugal and Venezuela, while the Czech Republic,
Iran and Mexico have bid for the FIFA U-17 World
Cup.
