This has been one of our club's most successful seasons ever for our select program.
We still have four teams headed for Provincials in July. We wish them the best of luck.

For this month we'll call these teams "teams of the month" for May. The select player of the month feature will resume in June. Coaches of all select teams are urged to submit their individual player nominations by the 15th of every month, along with a digital photo and a short paragraph about the player. We've got some excellent players: let's get to know them!

Try outs for our Select teams will start June 2.

mwc photoThis year's "Mini World Cup" was held in Nanaimo this last May 16th & 17th weekend. Thanks to Nanaimo for hosting this great event. By all reports, everyone had great fun! We look forward to next year's event to be held in Port Alberni!

coach of the monthCongratulations to Scott Middleton for being selected
"Coach of the Month" for May.

Scott coaches the U13/14 Boys "Rush" Team. Going to school has not deterred Scott from taking on the challenge of coaching soccer. While "taking his own pulse" he keeps his eyes on the play to make sure his team is working hard and having fun! Even if not on top, he is encouraging and always looking to fair play. Thank you so much Scott!

Call for New Club Directors: 2009-2010 Season

Our Annual General Meeting has been set for Saturday June 13th from 3:30pm to 5:30pm at the clubhouse to be followed by a BBQ to honour the 10th anniversary of the club's existence. AGM agenda and documentation are now viewable on our website.

On that day, one of our directors will be stepping down from her position after completing her term. This will leave us with a total of three openings on the Board of Directors to be filled by new leaders keen on contributing to soccer in the Comox Valley.

These positions include:

-  V.P. of House Soccer
-  V.P. of Development
-  V.P. of Women's Soccer

In addition to this, we have identified a need for leadership to cultivate sponsorship for our club.

If you have any interest in these areas, you are encouraged to contact myself, the club or any of our directors in the coming weeks. Job descriptions for these positions are specific and we can go over with you exactly what is involved. It is the dedication of our membership that enables everyone to enjoy soccer in the best way possible.

Sincerely, Matthew Blecha
President CVUSC

Canada-USA match to be broadcast on Rogers Sportsnet, Mon May 25

canvusThe Canadian Soccer Association announced today that its upcoming Canada-USA women's match in Toronto will be broadcast live on Rogers Sportsnet. The match, which kicks off at 19.00 on Monday 25 May at BMO Field, will be shown on all four Sportsnet channels from coast to coast. The Canucks are hosting the number-one ranked Americans on home soil for the first time in eight years.

Our fans from coast to coast will have the opportunity to watch our national team on Sportsnet,' said coach Carolina Morace. 'It should be an excellent match and an excellent test for our players.' Just last August at the 2008 Women's Olympic Football Tournament, Canada pushed the eventual-Olympic champion USA into extra time in the quarter-final stage. Christine Sinclair scored Canada's tying goal in the 30th minute in what was one of the classic Canada-USA contests of the year. In extra time, USA's Natasha Kai slipped through the winning goal to send Canada packing.

With first year in books, Concacaf Champions League expectations rise for second season

concacaf champsIt took only a final 0-0 draw to complete Atlante's title, delighting its fans and capping a nine-month odyssey that was the inaugural CONCACAF Champions League. Despite a hurricane-blown start, more than half of a million fans came out to see the confederation's new club championship. Atlante's
2-0 aggregate victory against Mexican rival Cruz Azul on Tuesday at Estadio Quintana Roo earned the Cancun club its first CONCACAF title since 1983, but opened a new soccer era in the region.
