redtideRed Tide Surges to BC Bronze

Congratulations to the U-17 Girls Red Tide who won Bronze  and thanks from the proud coaching staff of Christine Koppa, Greg Grieve and Darrin McLeod to the entire team for their commitment and effort throughout the season. Thanks also to our great group of parents for your continued support, to our dedicated field crew and to our manager, Kathy Campbell, for keeping us organized. Special thanks, also, to Shoreline Orthodontics and Dr. Paul Helpard for your
continued support of CVUSC soccer.  (Please read the article is on our website)

Congrats to our U-13 Boys Red Devils.  After a slow start over in Vernon, the boys rallied to win their last two games and finish the event in fifth place. Way to Go!

Congrats as well to our U-16 Girls Hot Tamales who travelled to North Vancouver, and won 2 and lost one in round robin play. Their record tied them for first place in their division, however due to the tie break procedure the girls were relegated to third place in their pool based on goal differential. The Tamales lost their playoff game and finished the event in sixth place. Excellent effort gang!

The "Select Player of the Month" feature is on a hiatus now and will start up again in September.

Do you know what children want from soccer, and from you?

Parents play a crucial part in supporting the involvement of their children in soccer. Great Britain's Football Association, FA, aims to help parents play a positive role, recognizing that involvement in soccer can greatly influence the development of children, both in the soccer environment and in their overall lifestyles.

FA's Respect program is working to help parents positively influence their children's involvement in soccer and to eradicate touchline abuse. Through a series of short videos the Respect program shows parents why children play soccer and how to encourage their children so that they have a life long involvement with the sport. The program can be found here http://www.thefa.com/respectguide/  for more info,
you may also click on http://www.thefa.com/GetIntoFootball/Parents.aspx

The "Coach of the Month" feature is also on a hiatus and will start up again in September.

Coach's Corner

As the new CVUSC VP Development, this is the first in a series of monthly articles I will write for the newsletter. The following is my soccer coaching background and philosophy and role as VP Development/Head Coach. I look forward to continue to support the Club in the development of you: the parents, coaches, and players.

1999-2001     Head Coach Petawawa Minor Soccer Club
1995-1999     EODSA Youth High Performance Coach

I'm thrilled to be back as VP Development and see my role as leading Player and Coaching Development. After taking all the above courses, coaching throughout Canada and in Europe, and playing at the highest youth level, my philosophy is simple: design each coaching session with an objective in mind, be highly enthusiastic, set a high standard, keep the players motivated/moving/learning, and above all make it fun!

To support you in your efforts, the club already has some fantastic fundamental policies like providing: BC Soccer Coaching Clinics free of charge, quality coaching manuals and equipment, and then providing additional coaching support as outlined in the news letters and website.

As a final word, I would like to take this opportunity to emphasize the following principles of coaching that all of us must aspire to in order to gain respect from, and show respect for, our players, parents, referees, and other coaches:

·         Be a good role model, be positive and constructive
·         Be consistent, on time and prepared
·         Have Respect for officials, opponents, coaches, players and the game
·         Promote Fair Play: integrity, fairness and respect
·         Promote: Cooperation, and Sportsmanship
·         Know the laws of the game
·         Communicate with players and parents
·         Ensure Maximum participation for House Soccer
·         Encourage Competitiveness but not a win at all costs attitude.
·         Emphasize Learning and Player Development
·         Let Players Try and Fail- that's how they get better.
·         Rid the Fear of Failure and Nurture Confidence!
·         Coach Possession Soccer
·         Be Enthusiastic!
·         Above all make it Fun!!!!!

Summarized Development Objectives/Plan:

Continuing with successful programs from past years and adding a few new ones, I've put together a plan of attack for the upcoming year, summarized below, which will hopefully support my goal of increasing the technical and tactical skills development of the coaches and youth members of the Club at both the Recreational and Competitive level.

Coaching Development Programs

CVUSC Local Sessions: Bambinos/Micros/Newcomer Coaches Clinic.
Skills Session 0900-1200 and
Understanding the game 1300-1500
Aug 29th,  09 at Valley View Fields.

These sessions are a must for any first time coach. Its all about fun games to play/coach with the kids, soccer skills basics, child development, and basically how to run a practise. The second 2 hours in the afternoon is dedicated on how to position kids on the field, how corner kicks work, what's the goal area- a fundamentals approach on how to play the game for the U6 to U10 players.

BC Soccer Community Coach Clinics:
Child (12 Sep 09),   Youth (19/20 Sep 09),   and Senior Clinics (TBD)

Upper Island Soccer Association is hosting two coaching clinics in September in Campbell River- See the Website for details or link to them is better. Coaches are asked to register electronically for the clinics through BCSA click here. Upon completion of the clinic bring the receipt to the soccer Office to be reimbursed. I'd like to keep track of all coaches attending these clinics, so please email me once you have registered: almohtadi@shaw.ca . If you have any questions give me a shout, I'm also hoping to have a Senior course provided here in the Comox Valley, more to come on dates/times. Please email me if you are interested in taking a Senior course. Although not mandatory by BC Soccer you should really take the Child, then Youth, then Senior clinics in that order. The courses are free of charge to CVUSC coaches and an excellent way to give you confidence and skills as a coach. I can't say enough about how valuable and fun the clinics are. In addition to theory and practical coaching aspects, you will learn a great deal from the other coaches. If you have young kids and you plan to coach them as they grow older what better way to educate yourself in a fun clinic! Mums especially, let Dad take the kids for a day and come out for these clinics!

Coaching Mentorship Program

If there is a desire for coaches to better themselves in the field of coaching and perhaps eventually take the Provincial B Certification and even the National B License, I'm willing to work with you to attain a higher level of coaching. My approach would be to work with you individually or in groups on throughout the season to: Ensure you know the route to achieve the various levels of certification;
Support your development through Training Session Development, Planning , Organization, Implementation, Technique, and Success; and
Provide Support and Feedback on training sessions and game preparation/plans/directions. Unofficial Program on Wednesday Nights, performing game analysis on Champions League matches with a cool one.

If you wish to be part of this mentorship please email me.
