~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thank you to all new and returning coaches and managers,
for coaching and managing your teams this 09/10 season.
Despite some of the challenges we're currently facing,
particularly with Nanaimo's absence and with interlocking
scheduling, I am very much hoping and wishing for us to all to
have as good of a season as possible. Thanks are due as well
to Paul West, Charlene Davidson for their dedication to our
club's select soccer program, to Darrin McLeod and Kathy
Campbell for their tireless efforts with UISA, our impromptu
team of field liners including Phil Statham, Stu Power, Archie
Harris, Paul West, Ryan Williams, Sabina Muir and Andy &
Nick Marinus who got our fields ready for this last weekend,
and not least Cheri Tilley for tackling most everything.
Best of luck to all our teams! Sincerely,
Matthew Blecha CVUSC President Local Girls to play in Super Y
Finals in Florida in November. Two of our
local girls Samantha Rodgers and Sarah Meredith qualified to
play in Florida in November. Both girls played house &
select with the CVUSC until the age of 13 and both are
currently playing for UVI Metro. The last 3 years, both have
played Super Y during the Spring & Summer. The team
consists of players from all over the island, and they play in
the USL league. The top 2 teams have qualified to play
in the USL Super Y-League North American Finals in November. A
record 16 British Columbia-based Pacific Northwest Division
teams are headed to Florida to compete in the USL Super
Y-League North American Finals in November. For more, click on
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ THANKS
and "WELL DONE!" to all new and returning coaches for coaching
a team or two this Fall season. The same goes to all our
division managers for getting the teams all organized. Our
club wouldn't be what it is without the volunteer coaches,
coaching our kids and manages to organize them. We've had a
good turn out of coaches to the coaching clinic so far this
year. For those who've not yet attended one, I encourage you
to check out the development section of this newsletter for
times and dates for future clinics as well as out our club
website. It was a beautiful warm and sunny day on Saturday.
Let's hope that all Saturdays are like this last one!
VALLEY VIEW FIELD CLOSURES: As of this moment,
the Valley View fields remain closed. With the intense heat
this summer combined with irrigation difficulties and above
average usage in August, the grass has taken a beating. These
fields have been seeded and treated several weeks ago now and
with this recent mix of rain and sun, the grass is beginning
to recover. Our club is monitoring the condition of the fields
and is looking forward to moving matches back to Valley View
as soon as the grass is fully recovered. Stay tuned for more
on this in the weeks ahead. WIND UP. Just to
clarify, our season ending WIND UP and registration will be
taking place on Sat Nov 21st, not Nov 28th as is says on some
house game schedules. The reason for the early wind up
is to maximize the likelihood of decent weather for our last
day. Our season remains an eleven-week season. Cheers,
Matthew "Coach of
the Month" for September
Congratulations to
Brian Dooling for being selected "Coach of the Month"
for September. Brian coaches team Portugal in the Micros
division. He found Ash's coaching clinic very
informative about how to teach a skill and to apply it in a
game situation. He's always been very positive and
enthusiastic about his first coaching experience. On top
of it, Brian did not hesitate to handle another team's players
when the other coach could not make it to the
practice/game. Way to go,
Brian!

Coaches I've set up a
clinic with BC Soccer Coaching staff to come to CVUSC to
perform a training session to both CVUSC Players and Coaches.
The session for the players will entail running the DDC U11
Academy players through a detailed training session as
outlined in the BC Soccer Grassroots Development Coaches
Handbook. The plan for the coaches, after the player training,
is to present Grassroots Youth Development in a classroom
presentation of about 45 mins. followed by one hour out on the
pitch. This is an excellent opportunity to see training being
given by a BC Soccer Staff Coach who currently coaches the
Boys U14 Provincial Team and to gain a better understanding of
Youth (U6-U14) Soccer Coaching Development. Follow the
directions on the email below to register, details of the

Development almohtadi@shaw.ca A Taste of the Future: Opportunities
for U16 & U18's
The following is
information submitted by Dave Irvine Manager, Technical
Programs & Staff Coach Vancouver Whitecaps FC on the
U16/U18 Academy program that the Vancouver Whitecaps will be
running for the 2009-10 season. The Vancouver
Whitecaps FC Academy is an invitation only 20-week program
aimed at offering boys and girls at the U18 age (1992 and
1993) and U16 age (1994 and 1995). The rationale for this
program is based on the premise that most Community Clubs do
not offer Academy programming for older youth players.
The intention of the Academy is not to conflict with players'
Community Club soccer commitments. Invited players are
strongly encouraged to discuss the situation with their club
team coach and club Technical Director/Head Coach to ensure
that participation in the Whitecaps FC Academy is not a
problem. Invitation Process Players have been
invited into this program based on the following
criteria: 1. Club Team evaluation through the
Whitecaps FC Regional Showcases 2. WFC Regional
Programming / BC Soccer District Development Centre network
3. Evaluation of players in BC Soccer / WFC / CSA -NTC
High Performance Programming 4. Academy Trial - on player
recommendation from Club Head Coaches/Technical Directors
The Academy program is divided into two (2)
separate sessions: Phase #1 (Week 1-10): Monday,
September 14, 2009 - Monday, November 23, 09 Phase #2
(Week 11-20): Monday, January 25, 2010 - Monday, March 29,
2010 Detailed information regarding the 2009-10
Academy program is now posted on the Club website at the link

HEAD REFEREE'S CORNER BC SOCCER ENTRY LEVEL
REFEREE CLINIC TO BE HOSTED BY CVUSC CALLING
TEENS (14+) AND ADULTS TO JOIN THE SOCCER REFEREE FAMILY
The fields will soon be alive with the sounds of
players of all ages enjoying their fall season of soccer.
Whether it be during the week with the Senior Boys' High
School schedule underway and the multitude of community
practices, or on the weekends when Saturday House Leagues,
Sunday Youth Select, VISL Men's Leagues, MIWSL Women's or
Master's games, the sport is very healthy in the Comox Valley.
With the expanded number of games, comes the inevitable
juggling act of getting officials for all games. There
probably isn't a community in the province that thinks it has
enough qualified referees. Our Valley has a dedicated nucleus
of very capable, dependable referees, but, as with most
non-university towns, we are resigned to losing many of our
bright youth officials once they are finished high school,
leaving almost no twenty-somethings in the local association.
With many adults enjoying playing beyond their 30's, even 40's
and 50's, it's not surprising that the two most representative
age ranges in the local soccer refereeing community are teens
and sexagenarians. I'm calling on teens (14+) and
adults of all ages, who know and love the game, adults who may
even still be playing for example, to consider
registering for a BC Soccer entry level clinic, and learn
alongside some of our enthusiastic youth participants, what
enjoyment can be gained from knowing the game on a whole new
level. Please consider contributing to the game in this most
vital of roles. Clinic Dates: Thursday, October
22nd (6:00pm - 10pm); Friday, October 23rd (6:00pm -
10pm) Saturday, October 24th (9am - 5pm) · classroom and

VOLUNTEERING Above
and beyond the more common volunteer positions associated with
the club, such as coaching, team managing and division
managing, our club currently has other means by which
volunteers can help. Most duties are indicated on the bottom
of the player's registration forms. A list is then compiled
and our volunteer coordinator Pat Foster then contacts parents
as the needs arise. There is currently a need for volunteer
help to assist with player data entry in the office. Anyone
interested in contributing a few hours of their time is asked
to contact Pat at mcfos@uniserve.com There is also a
developing need for cultivating sponsorship for club. Those
interested in this aspect of things are urged to contact
Matthew at mjblecha@gmail.com Team BC wins gold at Canada Games
August 22, 2009 Team BC captured gold in
the final of the women's soccer competition at the 2009 Canada
Games after defeating Quebec 1-0 in Summerside, Prince Edward
Island, on Saturday afternoon. Vancouver Whitecaps
Prospects Women's team striker Jenna Richardson scored the
only goal of the match in the first half. Richardson was later
voted the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
With
strong winds blowing diagonally across the field, the
conditions were a definite factor in the game, and an early
indicator of the approach of Hurricane Bill. British Columbia
won the coin toss and opted to play into the wind in the
opening half. With the wind at their back in the second half,
Team BC took the play to Quebec, using their possession game
and high pressure tactics to great advantage. The side from
'la belle province', who came into the match having outscored
their opponents 14-1, were never able to settle, and did not
seriously threaten the Team BC goal. This is Team
BC's second-straight Canada Games title, having won gold back
in 2005. It is also the province's fourth title in five
competitions since women's soccer made its Canada Games debut
back in 1993. "Winning gold at the Canada Games
is a great achievement for all the players and staff of Team
BC," said Whitecaps FC director of youth Dan Lenarduzzi. "The
opportunity to work with this group as Whitecaps full-time
players through the year, and in partnership with BC Soccer,
is definitely paying dividends. We look forward to more in the
future." Claiming Canada Games gold caps a
triumphant season for the squad. Playing as the Whitecaps
Prospects Women, they finished runners-up in the Pacific Coast
Soccer League Premier Division regular season before winning
the PCSL's Dave Fryatt Challenge Cup in the playoffs. They
then finished second at the prestigious Surf Cup youth
tournament in San Diego, California. FIFA U-20 WORLD CUP EGYPT Sept
