SPRING SEASON

The Spring Season kicks off again on Saturday April 10th and goes through to Saturday June 19th.  The coaches meetings are slated for Monday and Tuesday March 29th and 30.  For week three, (April 24th) our VP of development, Ash Mohtadi has organized two excellent Grassroots coaching Sessions (see development) for our coaches.

THE MINI WORLD CUP 2010 IN PORT ALBERNI, MAY 1st AND 2nd

This is a fantastic fun soccer tournament open to kids aged from U8 through to U11. The registration deadline is March 25th with the total number of teams accepted capped at 70. This year, our house division managers will take on the roll of forming the teams so anyone wanting to participate is urged to inform their division managers and obtain details from them. AGE APPROPRIATE PRACTICE FIELDS & GYMS

fieldIn an effort to ensure that younger aged teams practice on the smaller sized fields and gyms and the older teams practice on the larger sized fields and gyms, a document listing the fields and gyms will be made available at the coaches meetings. Coaches are requested to arrange practice facilities according to this list.

VP DEVELOPMENT COACHES' CORNER

Community Coach Clinics

CVUSC has programmed several Coaching clinics covering all areas of coaching development from the brand new parent, novice coach, through to Select coach. The intent is to provide you the coach all the tools you need to develop yourself in to the best coach and our youth into the best soccer players they can be while having fun. All the clinics outlined below are free to all CVUSC coaches. CVUSC will typically only pay for one of these clinics per calendar year, unless special permission is given explicitly by the VP Development. Clinics will be held at the CVUSC Clubhouse and Valley View Fields. Come prepared with food, snacks and water and prepared to play with the appropriate soccer playing strip. There will be on-field play (mostly) and some classroom discussion so bring a note pad and pen as well. There is no better way to build your confidence and understanding of the basics of coaching, I highly recommend all coaches to take at least one clinic per year- our Comox Valley youth deserve it.

OLYMPIAN LENARDUZZI CARRIES THE TORCH 12  February 2010

torchFormer Canadian Olympian Bob Lenarduzzi carried the Olympic torch on Friday 12 February in downtown Vancouver. Lenarduzzi carried the torch on the final day of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay. The XXI Olympic Winter Games runs this 12-28 February in Vancouver, BC.

Lenarduzzi is one of several members of the soccer community who have been part of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay. Lenarduzzi was an outstanding member of Canada's national team. He made 47 appearances between 1972 and 1986 and helped Canada win the 1985 CONCACAF Men's Championship. He subsequently took part in the 1986 FIFA World Cup™, his final international tournament as a player.

MAKE YOUR PLAYERS FEEL SPECIAL (from footy4kids)

Ten simple ways to boost your players' self esteem

1) Greet every player by name as they arrive for practice and matches - it's the easiest way to make them feel wanted.

2) Take an interest in your players - find out what they like doing when they're not playing soccer.

3) Make sure every player starts matches - don't start with the same line up every week.

4) Acknowledge effort - you want your players to give 100% so say 'well done' when they do.

5) Give your players responsibility - you don't have to run every training session, let them choose what to do sometimes.

6) Be kind - never criticize a player in front of their team mates.

7) Encourage risk taking - don't stifle creativity. If a player wants to dribble the ball out of defence, praise them. They will learn by the results.

8) Give players individual, achievable targets - i.e., for a player who doesn't like to tackle you can set them the target of making two tackles in a match. That way all your players can be winners.

9) Make every player a key member of the team - there's something special about every one of your players. Tell them what it is.

10) Rotate your captain - all young soccer players like to be captain for a day.
