Congratulations to Leah Cicon for being selected Player of the month for February

Leah CiconNew to the U13 Girls Crush this year, her easy-going personality enabled her to fit in with her team-mates instantly.  Leah brings a strong work ethic to practices and games.  She is respectful, attentive and willing to try new things and then use them in her game. This has allowed her to show improvement each time out.  On a team that prides itself on hard work, Leah leads by example. Whether on the offensive or defensive side of the ball, her great speed and aggressive play make for a long afternoon for her opponents. Keep up the good work Leah!

Provincial Cup play-downs are happening now. The Upper Island play-downs for all age groups take place throughout the month of February. The winners of those play-downs will have the opportunity to move on to the next phase of the Provincial cup format which, depending upon the age group, will include playoffs with the Lower Island representatives. In addition winners in from the Island play-downs will advance to the Provincial Cup taking place in July. In addition the Island representatives for the Provincial Cup are also eligible for play in the Coastal Cup in Coquitlam in May.

Our club had a tough weekend this last weekend as far as cup play goes. Well done to all who played!  We wish our remaining teams: the U-13 & 14 boys, and the U-13 and 16 girls the best of luck in their quest for provincial berths.

CVUSC launches new improved website  -- www.cvusc.org

February's On-Line Survey Question. Topic:  Potential Paid Head Coach

Our club is currently evaluating the benefit versus the cost of a paid head coach. Clearly, there are enumerable benefits to having a professional coach, including enhanced program structure, greater club unity and greater organization of coach and player development, to name a few. Such a coach would make him or herself as available to all coaches and players as possible but would not necessarily devote him or herself exclusively to any one player or team. The cost of acquiring such a person, however, can only be recovered by increasing player registration fees.

The question to our membership then is "to what extent would you be willing to pay an increase of fees in order to cover the cost of the generic services of a paid head coach". Please take 15 seconds and respond to the survey here.

Whitecaps Day Trip in 2009

whitecapsThanks to those who have responded to the movement to organize a bus trip to see the Whitecaps. Their schedule has been made official and there are no obvious dates that currently jump out that would make this doable without staying overnight. We are staying very tuned to the announcement of their exhibition schedule (which occasionally are held in Victoria) as well as the announcement of the Concacaf champion's league qualifying tournament schedule. One of these may prove to be worth the trip. Stay tuned on this.  Those who may be interested are urged to send an e-mail to mjblecha@gmail.com and we'll get a interest list started.

 Wacky Hairstyles! (Fifa.com)

hairstylesIt's an unforgettable image: a player running away in celebration having scored the deciding goal in a FIFA World Cup™ Final. The one of Brazil's Ronaldo commemorating his winner against Germany at Korea/Japan 2002 was, however, exceedingly memorable. The reason for this was the tuft of hair that covered the front of O Fenômeno's otherwise shaven head - a unique style he assumed after being mistaken for team-mate Roberto Carlos by his infant son. Japanese midfielder Kazuyuki Toda also sported an outrageous hairstyle during the competition and just one year earlier, David Beckham left mouths agape with his mohawk cut. When the Englishman jonied Los Angeles Galaxy in 2008, he teamed up with another two men renowed for their extravagant hairstyles: club president and former USA defender, Alexi Lalas, and Portuguese right-back Abel Xavier.

The aforementioned are among a long list of players renowned for their wacky hairdos. Carlos Valderrama's was described as an "electrified afro", while Rudi Voller and Kevin Keegan were distinguishable by their shoulder-length perms, Ruud Gullit by his dreadlocks, Roberto Baggio by his ponytail, and Taribo West by his 'strings'.

"He's got a pineapple, on his head" was the terrace chant that reverberated around stadiums when English striker Jason Lee was in action during the 1990s, and Djibril Cisse gained notoriety for his bleached-blond mohican. Charlie George, Trifon Ivanov, Paul Gascoigne, Rene Higuita, Christian Ziege, Loco, Carlos Puyol, Fabricio Coloccini and Bacary Sagna are just some of the many players who have, at some point in their careers, received attention for their wild hairstyles.
